Today, on December 30, West Bengal received its first Vande Bharat express train on the major Howrah-New Jalpaiguri line. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the train via video conference since he needed to get to Ahmedabad for the funeral of his mother Heeraben, who died this morning.
The First Vande Bharat Express for Bengal
It is the first Vande Bharat Express to operate in West Bengal and the rest of the country’s eastern regions. It is also the eighth Vande Bharat train operated by Indian Railways in the country.
According to Eastern Railway spokeswoman Ekalabya Chakraborty, the speedy train with advanced passenger facilities will take around 7.5 hours to go in both directions. The state’s inaugural semi-high-speed train service would operate six days a week, he added. It would greatly reduce travel time between Kolkata and Siliguri, the gateway to the Northeast.

According to the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Howrah, in the case of other trains, just a portion of the train shed is covered while the remainder is exposed to the elements. In the case of Vande Bharat, however, the whole region is shaded. According to reports, a dedicated crew has been prepared in the Howrah division for the maintenance of the Vande Bharat.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister will lay the groundwork for and dedicate different development projects totaling Rs. 7,800 crore to the state.
