Yet another change has been announced by the billionaire entrepreneur and owner of Twitter Elon Musk. Musk confirmed that the social media micro-blogging platform would remove inactive user accounts, ones that have not been operated for several years. The move is set to free up abandoned handles. However, in a separate tweet, the Latest News he confirms that the inactive accounts will be achieved.
Musk’s Decision on account removal – Effects on Users
The decision to remove the inactive accounts would result in a drastic reduction in the number of followers as an immediate effect of the action. However, the announcement also confirms that users need to log in to their individual accounts at least once in 30 days to ensure that the account remains active. The same is reflected in the policies of Twitter as well. “We’re purging accounts that have had no activity at all for several years, so you will probably see follower count drop,” Elon Musk tweeted.
Changing Times and Changing Twitter
Changes have been the only thing constant as far as Twitter is concerned. The age-old saying does hold relevance at least as far as the platform is concerned after Elon took over. A series of changes were promised before the takeover and are now taking effect one by one. Quite a few of them have been announced and slowly the policies are taking effect, one after the other.
Earlier this month, Musk “threatened” to reassign National Public Radio’s account to another company, after the public broadcaster stopped posting content to its 52 official Twitter feeds in protest against a label that implied government involvement in its editorial content. Twitter last month removed the legacy verified blue tick from the profile of thousands of people, including celebrities, journalists and prominent politicians.
Musk has made account verification a part of Twitter’s Blue subscription, a move he said would tackle the issue of bot accounts on the social media platform.
