Google has remembered the famous female scientists from the United States of America, Marie Tharp for making a Doodle. Marie Tharp is known for starting her career in 2001 from Lamont Geographical observatory. So let us know about some of the facts associated with Marie Tharp and see how her works have revolutionized the world of geographical science.
About Marie Tharp
Marie was born on 30 July, 1920. She was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan in the United States of America. Her father used to work in the US Department of Agriculture. Marie Tharp had attended the university of Michigan for her Master’s Degree in Petroleum Geology. She later moved to New York City in 1848 and became the first woman to work at the Lamont Geological Observatory. Here Marie Tharp had met geologist Bruce Hagen.
Notable contributions
M Tharp is well known mostly for her works towards making maps on the ocean floor by using ocean depth data collected by Heizen in the depths of the Atlantic ocean. Tharp had also donated the entire map collection to the Library of Congress in 1995. She is also well known for publishing the first world map of the ocean floor in 1957 alongside Bruce Hagan. This is known as a game changer in the field of geographical research since it led to many other scientists later on discovering several other facts about the ocean floor and the state of life that lives there. In fact, it is worth noting that National Geographic had published this map which was titled as the World Ocean Floor by Marie and Bruce Hagan. Marie also had proven the theory of continental drift to be true which later earned her to be one of the greatest cartographers of the 20th Century. All this has led to geographic researchers being able to make further research for understanding phenomena like volcanic eruptions or crust movement and many more thereby also understanding past geological events on Earth.
