Law Minister Kiren Rijiju sacked from his current post

Kiren Rijiju, one of the most high-profile ministers of the Modi Cabinet has been reportedly sacked from his current position as Union Law Minister and has been moved out to a more inconsequential position as the Minister of Earth Sciences. The reshuffling comes after almost a year from the time Kiren Rijiju was elected as the Law Minister after being a Minister Of State and was made a part of the Cabinet.

Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State in charge of Parliamentary Affairs, will now also have Independent Charge of the Law Ministry. The latest news is it should be noted that this is the first time in the Modi Cabinet that the Law Minister is not a part of the Cabinet.

The removal of Kiren Rijiju as Law Minister

Even though the former Law Minister was known to be a crisis-solver or troubleshooter of the Modi Government, which in fact was one of the foremost reasons that he was elevated as a Cabinet Minister from being a Minister of State, in a very short time, his stint at the Law Ministry was marred by controversies. During his tenure in the Ministry, he had frequent run-ins with the Judiciary, regarding the process of Appointing Supreme Court Judges. There have been times when he was known to have openly criticized the Supreme Court on the collegiums system of appointing Supreme Court judges.

Possible reasons for the change

A few months ago, in February 2023, the Supreme Court had openly expressed its concerns over the delay in that clearing the Judge appointments and transfers and had even gone to the extent of saying that, “administrative and judicial actions which might not be palatable”. The government vs judiciary confrontation escalated when Mr. Rijiju said last year that the collegium system is “alien” to the Constitution and had no public support. “Anything which is alien to the Constitution merely because of the decision taken by the courts or some judges, how do you expect that the decision will be backed by the country,” he had said.

A statement issued by the President’s office today morning announced the decision of the transfer of the Law Minister, Kiren Rijiju mentioning that the same is been acted upon the advice of the Prime Minister.
