CAT Examination Process overview & application guidelines

CAT Examination Process or Common Admission Test is the entrance examination for premier business schools in India for MBA (Master in Business Administration). The process involves 3 different stages starting with a written examination followed by a Group Discussion and finally a Personal Interview. Based on the scores of the written examination, IIM’s and other premier B-schools shortlist candidates for the next 2 rounds. Examination is generally held in the month of November every year for which registrations begin in August or September of the same year.

The registration process for the Common Admission Test involves 3 steps and can be done ONLINE only.

  1. Creating the candidate profile in the CAT website (https://iimcat.ac.in) for both IIM’s and non- IIM’s for generating the login credentials.
  2. Logging into the website (https://iimcat.ac.in) with the above generated User ID and password.
  3. Filling up the details and submitting the application form after making online payment.
  4. Documents required for the registration of CAT Examination Process:
  • SSC ( Class 10) and HSC ( Class 12) mark sheet.
  • Mark sheet and certificate of Graduation.
  • Proof of DOB.
  • Proof of Address.
  • Caste certificate, PwD certificate, Scribe certificate (as applicable).
  • Work Experience Proof (if applicable).
  • Bank details (either Credit/Debit Card or Net banking/UPI details).

Eligibility Criteria:-

  1. Candidates must be a Graduate with minimum 50% marks (for General and NC-OBC). In case of Differently Abled or SC/ST minimum 45% marks in Graduation are required.
  2. Degree awarded has to be from a University recognized by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development (MHRD).
  3. Universities awarding CGPA, the conversion factor specified by the University has to be used. In case of unavailability of the above, the same needs to be converted into percentage.
  4. Candidates securing 50% in their professional degree are also eligible to apply (45% for SC/ST and/or PwD).
  5. For final year students, the graduation mark sheet needs to be submitted at the time of selection, failing which the candidature will be cancelled.
